PROPOSED MIDDLE SCHOOL ON DAVIS FORD ROAD – The Site Is Not Right Or Safe For Our Children; Our Children Deserve Better.

NEXT STEP: PRESERVE the DAVIS FORD SITE

The group, Citizens for Davis Ford Quality of Life, is working to prevent the sewage treatment site on Davis Ford Road from being clear cut for development. It has filed an appeal of the County Zoning Administrator’s determination of the Special Use Permit (SUP) conditions and requirements for the cell tower on the site. At issue is whether the SUP requirement to retain the trees and vegetation on the site is limited to the 10,000 square foot area, leased by Bell Atlantic for the cell tower, or encompasses the entire 59 acres. The Zoning Administrator has determined that the SUP applies only to the 10,000 square foot area.

The “Citizens…” appeal is based on specific language in SUP: “The (cell tower) facility shall be located in the wooded area on the property as shown on the special use permit plan. The trees outside of the grading limits shown on the plan shall be retained.” The plan’s general notes specify that the SUP covers the entire 59 acres and that existing vegetation on the 59 acres will remain intact to serve as a buffer.

The Davis Ford Site has strong Occoquan Forest roots. The Forest’s original developer owned the site and planned to develop it for our community’s recreation. The County’s bond to purchase the site was funded through an assessment on the water bills of Forest residents. Occoquan Forest’s covenants concerning land usage restrictions still apply to the site.

The reasons for preserving the Davis Ford site are many. The Citizens for Davis Ford Quality of Life see the site’s preservation as a critical opportunity for the County to uphold its commitment to open space and to the environment. Since Occoquan Forest residents paid for the land through the bond assessment, the opportunity comes at virtually no cost to the County.

The date for SUP appeal hearing has not been set yet. When the date is known, it will be posted on this website and on signs along Davis Ford Road. Please plan to attend.

Any change to this status or information will be announced here, so please check back.
